Born Ina Barn

promo packshot
Artist: Born Ina Barn
Title: Futuristic Roots
Label: Rustik Records
Genre(s): Reggae / Hiphop

Futuristic roots was conceived out of a love for Jamaican music and the sound system culture it spawned as the first ever bass lead genre, since the sixties Jamaicans have pushed the boundaries sonically in the dance halls and socially through conscious thinking, this album is our take on the evolution of those genres.

Being that we are the children of the dance music generation, we added the UK’s flavour to that mixture using breakbeat, jungle and drum n bass with hints of hip hop and dancehall lacing classic drum breaks over original samples, and recreating the chords in our own style. From Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, to Lee Perry and Toots and the Maytals this album is filled with nods towards these pioneers and their contributions.

Senator Kamala Harris Delivers Floor Speech Calling Out the GOP Secret Health Care Bill

Senator Kamala Harris Delivers Floor Speech Calling Out the GOP Secret Health Care Bill

Friend,

Yesterday,
U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris joined her Senate Democratic colleagues to hold the floor in opposition to the Senate Republicans’ secret health care bill, and highlighted the lack of transparency and bipartisanship shown throughout its development. Harris delivered personal testimonies from Californians whose lives have been saved by the Affordable Care Act. The Republican health care bill would put 4 to 5 million Californians at risk of losing coverage.
Previously, Harris spoke on the floor to defend the ACA on the anniversary of its signing, and has since introduced legislation with Senator Feinstein and other Senate Democrats to improve the ACA and make coverage more affordable.

Key Quotes from Senator Harris’ remarks:
  • We know, because we’ve been told, that it’s about 80% the same as the bill that was passed by the House, a bill so catastrophic that even the President of the United States who hailed its passage now calls it, “mean.” We know that it would throw 23 million Americans off their health insurance within a decade, including putting 4 to 5 million Californians at risk of losing coverage. We know it would raise costs for middle class families and seniors. In every county of California, average monthly premium costs would go up while financial support to pay premiums would fall. We know it would put Americans with pre-existing conditions at risk, and leave people who need maternity care or opioid treatment without coverage or force them to pay huge out-of-pocket costs. We know it would cut about $834 billion from Medicaid, which means less money for families to pay for nursing homes, to support children with special needs, or to treat substance abuse.
  • And I know that I’m just one of two senators that [Californians] have. And when it comes to their needs and their need to be represented in the United States Congress, and their need to be heard, and their need to be seen, party affiliation should not matter. What should matter are the needs of the American people. And regardless, then, of who they vote for in a partisan election, I am certain of this: this healthcare plan that is being proposed by my colleagues from across the aisle will not solve their problems. And it will only create, in fact, more problems and potentially devastate people’s lives.
You can watch the Senator's full remarks on her Facebook page here.
Thanks,
Julie

Sarah Golley

Sarah Golley

“Equipped with only a keyboard and looping machine, Golley is able to achieve a moody opulence rare among solo artists.”
— Devon Antonetti, Village Voice 2017

In 2013, Sarah Golley attended a festival in New York City in which Fiona Apple performed. She was so enthralled and inspired by her vulnerability on stage that she decided to learn all of Fiona’s songs as a piano exercise.

Through this, Sarah began to write her own music, which proved to work through the challenges and changes in her life after graduating college.

With a goal to perform an original song in public, she began her career as an indie musician, but her performance roots dig deep.

Sarah began her journey into the performing arts with tap dancing. Next, she began piano lessons, and soon after that she began singing in several esteemed choirs.

She’s always been a fan of musical theater, and has performed in many shows  (Spring Awakening, The Full Monty, Rock of Ages, Gypsy).  She studied classical voice, and graduated from The Hartt School of music with a degree in music education/ vocal emphasis.

Sarah has spent the last four years teaching music at a special education school in Connecticut.

In 2015, Sarah began to arrange and record her songs by herself, in her living room, using Garageband.  These recordings became her release “Weaving the Pieces.”

Through this process, Sarah was able to break away from the musical structures she felt trapped behind, and incorporate several aspects of her various stylistic backgrounds. She’s no stranger to many different genres, and her training always manages to find its way into her art.

“The singer simultaneously establishes a narrative of strength and angst- a dichotomy she maintains throughout her music- while offering rich sonic textures.”
— Devon Antonetti, Village Voice 2017

Sarah tries to live her life with a strong vulnerability. She feels she’s always existed in the in-between, embodying qualities of different sides, being simultaneously both and neither.

She knows there must be people out there who relate to this feeling, and hopes her music reaches them the same way she’s been reached by artists like Fiona Apple.

The only way to heal yourself is to embrace your truth, and the only way to heal others is to share that truth, whole-heartedly, without shame or inhibition.

“Through our art we find out truths”
