JOAN CRAWFORD – A star at any cost?

Posted on February 13, 2015 by  in Did You Know?

Of all the movie stars that have come and gone down the decades, none strove so hard, or for so long, as Joan Crawford did, to get to the top of the pile and remain there. In effect, there was almost nothing she would not do to become and stay a star. She was born in 1905 with the unfortunate name of Lucille LeSueur, but MGM would later change that to Joan Crawford, a name she despised because it was ‘too plain’. MGM thought her real name sounded too much like ‘sewer’, hence the change.
At the age of eleven her mother caught the highly sexed Lucille having sex with one of her step-fathers (she would have three of them). Two years later the girl began sleeping with her brother and by her late teens she had already been arrested by Chicago police on prostitution charges while working at a mob speak-easy. Two highly explicit pornographic movies, Velvet Lips and The Casting Couch soon followed starring a very energetic Lucille. Years later, MGM executives would deny they existed, but would quietly spend thousands tracking down and buying every copy they could find. Even so, copies are still around today in private collections.
It was during those early, pre-star, days that the freckled Lucille (she was smothered in freckles from head to toe) contracted VD for the first time and underwent more than one abortion. ‘I happen to know’, said Veronica Lake, ‘that Joan Crawford and Tallulah Bankhead couldn’t have babies because of the illegal abortions performed on them.’ In 2002, a photograph surfaced that clearly showed a naked Joan in the arms of an equally naked woman, suggesting that her life-time denial of ever having female lovers may not have been entirely true. There was never any doubt about her having male lovers, however.
Once she made it to Hollywood, an MGM contract and a name change, Joan quickly settled in to seducing men of all ages. One of the youngest was 17 year-old Jackie Cooper who she invited around to her home a number of times over a few months until she tired of him. ‘Put it all out of your mind’, she coldly informed him the day she ended their trysts. ‘It never happened.’ Bette Davis, with whom she would maintain a life-long feud, said of her: ‘She slept with every male star at MGM except Lassie.’ (For those who don’t know, Lassie was a boy dog, not a girl).
L B Mayer, head of MGM, knew her well. ‘I have great admiration for her as an actress, but she’s a slut’, he said. ‘She is what she is, a cheap flapper who likes to get laid.’ She also swore like a sailor, which turned off some of the big stars such as Henry Fonda and John Wayne. Her usual plan of attack was to arrive at a party unescorted, then select a man from the throng and ask him to drive her home later. Few refused, for her reputation was well and truly known. She would regularly undress in front of studio staff, both men and women, whilst casually discussing movie business.
On her death in 1977 it was discovered that she had disinherited both her adopted children, Christina and Christopher. ‘For reasons well known to them both’, she wrote. These days it is commonplace for actors to adopt children from around the world, but it was Crawford who first did so in Hollywood, and her reasons were all connected to her ‘image’, accompanied by a sizeable chunk of jealousy. When her rival Bette Davis gave birth in 1947 and attracted all the media’s attention, Crawford quickly arranged through her mob connections, for Meyer Lansky to ‘fix’ it so she could adopt two babies through his black market contacts. Joan was unmarried at the time, so money changed hands.
Within 17 months of her demise she became the subject of a book by daughter Christina that portrayed her as a child abuser and a truly horrible mother. The book, Mommie Dearest, sold well and was made into a movie starring Faye Dunaway as Joan. Crawford’s friends insist that it was Christina’s way of exacting revenge for being cut out of her mother’s will, but many others who knew Crawford are equally adamant that it hits close to the mark.
Joan’s attitude to the industry and her career was summed up in an interview: ‘If you’re going to be a star, you have to look like a star, and I never go out unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star’, she explained. ‘If you want to see the girl next door, go next door.’

Why IBM Recently Acquired Ustream

Why IBM Recently Acquired Ustream

posted by on Jan 31, 2016
  • IBM has acquired Ustream, a provider of cloud-based live video streaming services.
  • IBM clients across industries require a secure, scalable, and open cloud-based solution to manage video services.
  • Ustream will be integrated in the new IBM Cloud Video Services unit to enable clients to manage live video in the cloud and add business analytics.
  • According to IBM estimates, cloud-based video services and software represent a $105 billion opportunity.
IBM (NYSE:IBM) has acquired Ustream, a provider of cloud-based live video streaming services. The move will extend the IBM Cloud platform to help enterprise clients unlock the value of video, a rapidly-evolving digital media and data asset. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Video has become a first-class data type in business that requires accelerated performance and powerful analytics that allows clients to extract meaningful insights," said Robert LeBlanc, Senior Vice President, IBM Cloud. "Aligning our expansive video and cloud innovations into an integrated unit will create opportunities for clients to take advantage of this medium in the most strategic way possible."

IBM Cloud is a collection of fully integrated services to help IBM clients to use data across all digital channels to understand their customers and anticipate their needs. According to the company, IBM Cloud is the first full spectrum cloud built on open technologies, with the world’s most advanced analytics and cognitive computing toolbox. Cognitive computing, which indicates computer systems that understand the world in the way that humans do, is an important strategic focus for IBM. The cognitive computing technology of IBM Watson and IBM neuromorphic chips is at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, but there are practical spin-offs that can already be used in commercial applications.

"Video is the most powerful and emotional medium,” said Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable. "Increasingly it is becoming the favored form of communication, not just for entertainment, but also for business. We've built a video platform that is easy-to-use, yet incredibly scalable, secure and powerful and it is these qualities that made us an ideal addition to IBM’s portfolio."

Video has become a primary method for engaging with customers and employees through a wide range of media assets. As a result, IBM clients across industries require a secure, scalable, and open cloud-based solution to manage video services.

This is especially significant given researchers estimate that 80 percent of the world’s data is unstructured and dark to computer systems that cannot effectively manage or exploit it. Video makes up a significant part of that data, and structuring video content - for example making it searchable and indexed - is where IBM cognitive computing in the cloud can make a difference.

Ustream will be integrated into the new IBM Cloud Video Services unit to enable clients to easily ingest, store and manage live and on-demand video, enhance them through analytics, apply rights management and language capabilities, and distribute them consistently across the globe.

"Through this latest acquisition and the creation of a new cloud business unit, IBM will provide an end-to-end suite of digital video solutions for the first time under one roof," said IBM Cloud Video Services unit head Braxton Jarratt. “As a result, clients will be able to take advantage of every stage of the video life cycle through advances in customization, digital access, visual analytics and more, all to enable the consistent delivery of video content globally." According to IBM estimates, cloud-based video services and software represent a $105 billion opportunity.

Ustream, headquartered in San Francisco, provides video streaming services to more than 80 million viewers and broadcasters. The company was established in 2007 and is a video streaming industry veteran. But more recently the technology giants have realized the importance of real-time video streaming and moved in. Alphabet Inc-C (NASDAQ:GOOG) offers live streaming via Google Hangouts, distributed via YouTube. Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) offer video streaming services integrated with today's leading social media.

IBM's video streaming strategy has a different and clear focus on enterprise cloud computing, business analytics, and integration with IBM's cognitive computing solutions. These are important factors for IBM's existing client base of large enterprise customers, and therefore video computing in the cloud is likely to have a positive impact on IBM's stock in the mid term.

Janey Reynolds - The Pin-Up Collectors Dream Girl

MEMPHIS TN (IFS) -- By the end of the 1960's, a lost art of the WWII pin-up girl was all but over.  Most of the great pictures we have of these beautiful women are in Black & White.  These images once considered "taboo" and just pornography is up for the high dollar price for original copies of these photos.  After the Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, and everyone one else in the picture with a porno video, this ledge is considered the bottom of the barrow for collectors.  However, "soft porn pin-up girls" is what the market is demanding right now.  Single lens reflex action with a good eye and a fast finger have given these ladies of a log ago and bye gone era just that -- memories of these women  fixed in time is priceless for collectors.

EBay.com's bins are overloaded with "soft pron" memories from WWII.  But whose pictures dominate the listing and the sample sites. .  . Janey Reynolds.  You will pay a pretty penny for these reprints from the original negatives and slides.

In the early 1950's the famed "Pin-Up Models" from WWII carried over into the new era of photography.  The boys of the war only got the "clean" image photos that you could send home to mother.  But now, the estates of many of these actresses, i.e., Hedy Lamarr's full color photos of her in the nude in various positions, is a little to much to believe, as this girl invented the US Navy's torpedo.

Not much is known about Ms. Janey Reynolds from Canada.  She has changed her name as many times as some countries.   Ms. Reynolds photographs have appeared in over 1,000 magazines all over the world.  She is considered the most photographed woman in the world.

Let's not just point fingers at the "bad" girls, as one must exclude Ms. Lamarr's full nude from the other girls who just wanted to get their pictue taken, and exclude the one girl that is that most photographed woman in the world at that time was Miss Janey Reynolds.

The pictures of these glorious females in all their abundant beauty and form is all that is left of these media industry pioneers.  There are very few stories of these ladies, especially Miss Janey Reynolds of Canada.

The color film and the new cameras of the day were made for each other.  The topless form of photography with female models was known as "soft porn".

Ms. Reynolds, by far was the most photographed pin-up girl ever.
